Joy Ride Funniest Movie : Can a single trip be both the best thing that’s ever happened to you, a complete trainwreck that wrecks your life, and a party fuelled by drugs?
Joy Ride Funniest Movie
In “Joy Ride,” a new friendship comedy starring Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Oscar candidate Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu, which opens this weekend, that is essentially what occurs.
In the movie, Lola (Cola), Park’s wild best friend, and Audrey (Park), a Chinese-American lawyer with white adoptive parents, travel to China for business.
But Lola wants to make this journey into something much bigger for them both, so she’s travelling with her cousin Deadeye (Wu).
They have all the ingredients they need for their unusual adventure and this very amusing, very weird movie when they meet up with Audrey’s seemingly ideal college flatmate Kat (Hsu), who is now a renowned, super-Christian Chinese actor.
It seems unfair to contrast “Joy Ride” with “Bridesmaids” or “The Hangover,” but that is undoubtedly the category in which it belongs: gross-out, friendship comedy.
Since “Joy Ride” takes place in that heightened type of environment where events may swiftly spiral out of control and celebrities and regular people can readily mix in unexpected ways, it definitely has more DNA from the latter movie.
However, “The Hangover” doesn’t have nearly the heart that “Joy Ride” does, which surprisingly caused me to cry in the theatre. “Joy Ride” explores themes of belonging, family, and finding one’s home without being frightened of emotion, connection, or excavating deeply felt emotions.
The heart of the movie is Park’s unexpected quest to find her birth mother and the way her friends help her on it;
Observing sexuality on film in all its chaotic splendour is one of the best aspects of “Joy Ride”.
This film depicts a sexual interaction that I don’t believe I’ve ever seen in a mainstream film before, and while jokes are made about it, the deed itself is portrayed as being really sexy and pleasurable. “Joy Ride” allows its stars to get wild in a way that feels invigorating while yet being incredibly ridiculous in an era where Hollywood films have less sex than before.
The performances from the quartet are able to bring “Joy Ride” back up and keep the motor running when the plot does begin to defy belief (the friends’ luggage seems to disappear and reappear between scenes, and perhaps I’m too Type-A to not panic over passport antics).
If Park were any less skilled at it, “Joy Ride” would be a lot poorer movie. Park in particular manages to effortlessly mix intense emotional moments with outrageous humour.
“Joy Ride” can soar even when a joke isn’t exactly flawless because Park gives such an agile and subtle performance that serves as its foundation.
The film closes off this friendship narrative with happiness and tenderness, despite the fact that the third act seems a little hurried (the film is just 90 minutes long but it feels like they should have added a few more).
