What is International status of Pickleball ?

Pickleball is not an Olympic sporting event and is not yet represented in the Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF).

There are two pickleball federations with multiple national members, the International Federation of Pickleball (IFP) and the World Pickleball Federation (WPF).

Both the IFP and WPF are pursuing efforts to have pickleball featured as an Olympic sport, possibly as a demonstration sport. The IFP is specifically working towards the Paris 2024 or Los Angeles 2028 summer games.

An article by Sports Illustrated concluded the game would not likely be seen at the Olympics before 2032. Pickleball was accepted as a demonstration sport at the July 2022 Maccabiah Games, considered the third largest sporting event in the world.

This marked the first time pickleball appeared at an event sanctioned by the International Olympic Committee.

International Federation of Pickleball (IFP)

The IFP, established in 2010 by the USA Pickleball Association, acts as the global governing body for pickleball. By July 2022, it boasted 63 national members.

However, a conflict within the organization led to the withdrawal of 7 out of 8 full member nations and 2 associate member nations, including USA Pickleball, reducing the IFP’s member nations to 70 by March 2022.

The IFP introduced the annual Bainbridge Cup in 2017, named after the birthplace of pickleball, Bainbridge Island. This event marked the sport’s inaugural intercontinental team competition, with North America facing off against Europe.

The victorious team is awarded the coveted Bainbridge Cup trophy. Unfortunately, both the 2020 and 2021 Bainbridge Cup team competitions were canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

World Pickleball Federation (WPF)

Established in 2018, the WPF has grown to include 37 member nations as of November 2022. Among its objectives is the governance of pickleball’s infrastructure. The WPF designated October 10 as World Pickleball Day, aiming to introduce 10,000 new players to the game every October 10.

In a significant move, the WPF announced the inception of the World Pickleball Games in 2021, envisioning it as a potential format for future Olympic games.

The inaugural World Pickleball Games were initially slated for May 2022 in Austin, Texas. However, due to the persistent challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the games were postponed until 2023.

When Started Para pickleball

Para pickleball, also known as adaptive or wheelchair pickleball, gained official recognition as a competitive branch of pickleball by USA Pickleball in 2016.

Similar to standard rules, there are slight modifications for players in wheelchairs. In this format, the player’s wheelchair is considered part of their body, meaning all rules applying to the body also extend to the wheelchair.

Wheelchair pickleball players are allowed two bounces instead of one, and when serving, they must be stationary, with just one push allowed before striking the ball for service. During service, the wheels of the wheelchair must not touch any baseline, sideline, center line, or extended lines.

In games involving both wheelchair and standing players, each player adheres to their specific set of rules. Standing players follow standard pickleball rules, while wheelchair players follow the modified wheelchair pickleball rules.

Regarding Professional Pickleball Tour Rules

Games in the APP Tour are sanctioned by USA Pickleball and strictly adhere to all rules established by the organization. However, the PPA Tour, although not sanctioned, has chosen not to adopt certain recent rule changes for professional and senior professional matches.

For non-professional PPA Tour matches, all rules in the USAP rulebook are followed.

The specific rules that the PPA diverges from in professional matches include the drop serve, the paddle swipe or chainsaw serve, and let serves. The PPA does not allow drop serves in professional matches, contrary to the new USAP rules.

The chainsaw serve, where a player touches the ball with only the hand releasing it, is considered illegal in APP games due to recent USAP rule changes.

However, the PPA continues to permit the chainsaw serve in professional matches. Additionally, let serves that hit the net but land in the correct service area are considered valid in USAP rules.

However, in PPA professional matches, such serves must be replayed. If a second let serve occurs during the replay, it results in a fault for PPA servers.

What is Noise controversy in Pickleball ?

The impact of a hard pickleball paddle striking the ball produces a distinct popping sound, which has led to tensions between pickleball court owners and nearby residents.

This continuous noise, coupled with the rapid surge in pickleball’s popularity, has sparked significant backlash against the sport in communities throughout the United States.

In September 2020, a park in the Portland metropolitan area faced such issues that it had to enforce a ban on pickleball, despite having recently installed new courts just five months prior.

Residents living closest to the courts reported an inability to have conversations indoors due to the noise. Surprisingly, even after the ban was imposed, people continued to use the pickleball courts in the following year.

During a West Linn City Council meeting in June 2021, a resident expressed how the noise had negatively impacted family gatherings, leading to discord and even physical stress.

Some individuals went as far as describing the noise as “trauma-inducing.” These concerns highlight the challenges communities face in balancing the popularity of pickleball with the noise-related disturbances experienced by residents.

Growing Popularity Of Pickleball In India

In the midst of a bustling evening in July, amid the chaos of a rainy night in Mumbai’s suburb of Vile Parle (East), the pickleball arena at the Prabodhankar Thackeray Krida Sankul (PTKS) stands unaffected.

Plastic sheets tied to bamboo scaffoldings shield the courts from the downpour as a lively doubles game unfolds under the bright white lights. Despite the surrounding traffic commotion, players enthusiastically engage in the game, their energy undeterred.

In the adjacent court, a group of young enthusiasts prepares for their training session while two boys diligently practice their backhand strokes. Pickleball, a racquet sport amalgamating elements from tennis, table tennis, and badminton, is gaining widespread popularity across India.

Individuals ranging from eight to 80 years old are embracing the game, whether for leisure, fitness, or even professional pursuits. Originating in the US in 1965, pickleball found its way to India, with its popularity surging, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, as a non-contact sport offering numerous health benefits.

The game’s introduction in India traces back to the late 2000s, championed by Sunil Valavalkar, the founder-director of the All India Pickleball Association (AIPA).

Valavalkar’s introduction to pickleball occurred in 1999 during his stay in Canada, where he lived with sports enthusiast Barry Mainsfield. Mainsfield’s passion for sports, including pickleball, left a lasting impression on Valavalkar.

Although he initially regarded pickleball as just another sport, his perspective changed in 2006 during a tennis clinic in Cincinnati, USA.

Observing the striking similarities between tennis and pickleball, Valavalkar was inspired to introduce the sport to India. Armed with four paddles and eight wiffle balls, he attempted to showcase the game’s potential.

His initial attempts met with skepticism and mockery. Valavalkar tirelessly demonstrated the game in parks, building compounds, and on the streets, facing ridicule from onlookers.

The sound of the ball striking wooden paddles, different from the contemporary carbon fiber ones, failed to inspire confidence. Even fellow tennis players expressed disapproval at his unconventional pursuits. However, encouragement from tennis player Anil Vyas provided Valavalkar with a glimmer of hope.

In 2008, driven by his passion for pickleball, Valavalkar founded AIPA, creating visiting cards and a letterhead to lend legitimacy to the association. With determination, he approached schools, colleges, and sports clubs, gradually garnering interest and support.

Despite the initial challenges, Valavalkar’s unwavering dedication played a pivotal role in bringing pickleball to the grassroots of India. Today, the sport continues to thrive, uniting enthusiasts across generations in the joy of playing pickleball.

The promotion of pickleball in Mumbai’s Goregaon took a significant leap when a demonstration was given to the National Cadet Corps students at Patkar College.

This event led to the formation of a group comprising 15 enthusiastic pickleball players. In 2008, Sunil Valavalkar showcased the game during a festival organized by The Times of India, marking the first appearance of the term ‘pickleball’ in the newspaper.

Valavalkar’s persistent efforts to promote the sport, rooted in his background of playing kabaddi and kho kho in school and college, were instrumental in its slow but steady growth.

In 2013, Valavalkar began organizing national tournaments, spanning till 2018. During this period, he traveled extensively across states like Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Bihar, establishing pickleball associations and conducting camps and tournaments.

His vision for the sport gained substantial momentum when he approached Arvind Prabhoo, chairman of PTKS (Prabodhankar Thackeray Krida Sankul). Prabhoo, recognizing the game’s potential, became a driving force in popularizing pickleball.

Prabhoo’s belief in the game’s future was founded on the fact that Indians excel in wrist games and racquet sports, making pickleball an easy sport to adapt to.

To make pickleball accessible to people across the country, Prabhoo organized local and ranking tournaments. The inaugural local tournament in Mumbai attracted 64 players (32 teams), and subsequent ranking tournaments in Pune and Dombivli saw participation from multiple states, with thousands of matches played over the course of a few days.

Despite the growing interest, challenges persisted, primarily concerning the cost of equipment. Initially, paddles from the US were prohibitively expensive, but as Indian companies started manufacturing them, prices became more affordable.

Notably, a trustee named Ymak initiated local production, utilizing raw materials from China to create paddles and balls, which were then sold at subsidized rates. This initiative significantly lowered the barriers to entry for aspiring pickleball enthusiasts.

The success of periodic tournaments, organized almost monthly, fueled enthusiasm among participants and inspired other states to replicate the model.

The collaborative efforts of Valavalkar, Prabhoo, and others led to the widespread acceptance and growth of pickleball, making it a popular sport accessible to people from various backgrounds and regions.

As the pickleball tournaments grew in scale, so did their budgets, escalating from Rs 18-20 lakh to Rs 25 lakh. In a groundbreaking event in 2022, the prestigious Bainbridge Cup, often dubbed the World Cup of pickleball, took place at the National Sports Club of India in Worli, Mumbai.

The tournament witnessed the participation of over 450 players from 12 countries, with a staggering 1,500 matches played over five intense days. Arvind Prabhoo, a former patron of Indian women’s cricket and an enthusiast of table tennis and badminton during his school and college years, highlighted the significance of this event.

“The prize money for that event was $50,500 [Rs 40 lakh-plus]. That was unprecedented,” he noted. The tournament was strategically positioned as a lifestyle game played by the elite, creating an aspirational allure.

Team India’s remarkable victory against a US team in the finals added a shock value to the win, capturing the nation’s attention and elevating pickleball’s status even further.

One rising star to emerge from this tournament was Mayur Patil, a 24-year-old talent hailing from Chopda, a small town in Jalgaon, Maharashtra. Patil, who clinched a silver medal in the open category at the Bainbridge Cup, is set to represent India at the English Open scheduled in August.

Eager to bring home a medal for the country, Patil, who began playing pickleball in 2015, plans to share his newfound expertise with fellow players upon his return.

With a background in table tennis and badminton, Patil found pickleball to be an engaging and less injury-prone racquet sport. “It’s a lot of fun, it’s an addiction.

Pickleball is easy to learn, but hard to master,” he shared, describing the game’s appeal. Despite hailing from a farming family, Patil’s dedication and talent have propelled him into the international pickleball arena.

Sunil Valavalkar and Arvind Prabhoo are optimistic about nurturing more promising talents like Patil. Their commitment extends to ensuring that even the most remote areas have the necessary infrastructure to foster sporting excellence.

By creating opportunities and promoting the sport’s accessibility, they aim to fuel the growth of pickleball and inspire a new generation of players across the country.

History of Pickleball In India

Sneh Giri hails from Jharkhand but moved to the US in 2008. In 2020, while he was in Chicago, he discovered pickleball. With a trip to India planned, he researched the sport in his home country and came across the efforts of Valavalkar.

They connected on Facebook, and when they met in Thane, Valavalkar encouraged Giri to promote pickleball in Dhanbad, a city where local enthusiast Gaurav Kumar was already organizing games, albeit in an unorganized manner.

Giri proposed organizing a tournament and offered to sponsor it. The Jharkhand Association Pickleball Tournament took place in July, featuring 45 players.

Describing the initial state of the courts in Jharia, Dhanbad, Giri noted the challenges players faced, including financial struggles, with many earning meager salaries. He has now taken it upon himself to raise funds for these players with the help of his NRI friends.

Pickleball’s growth in India has been slow, but Giri remains optimistic about its future. He is currently focused on securing funding for four pickleball players from Jharkhand, enabling them to participate in tournaments in places like Mumbai, Goa, and Bangkok.

He also believes that Indian pickleball players residing in the US should join the AIPA, an organization founded by Valavalkar. Giri has even discussed plans with the mayor of Dhanbad, who has committed to building four world-class pickleball courts in the city.

Similarly, during the pandemic, Jacob Bijo Daniel from Mavelikkara in Kerala discovered pickleball. Seeking an indoor activity for his children, he stumbled upon the sport.

Unaware of pickleball’s existing presence in India, he was amazed at Valavalkar’s contributions and felt inspired to popularize the game in his state.

Daniel and his family participated in various categories at the Bainbridge Cup, guided by Valavalkar, whom he regards as a fatherly figure providing valuable guidance and support.

As the president of the Federation of Pickleball Association of Kerala (FPAK), the agricultural engineer, along with his wife, who serves as the secretary of FPAK, is gearing up to introduce pickleball to schoolchildren.

Their vision includes organizing a statewide tournament within the next three months. Previously employed in the private sector in the Middle East, he has shifted his focus to popularizing unconventional racket sports.

In Goa, former under-25 cricketer Manoj Patil is approaching pickleball from a tourism and industry perspective. As the president of the Goa Pickleball Association, he recently hosted a national ranking tournament in Madgaon.

The event attracted 250 players from 17 states who competed for top honors over a span of three days.

Before the tournament, demonstration sessions were conducted in both North and South Goa for physical education teachers from various schools.

Patil extended invitations to the hospitality sector and housing societies, aiming to establish Goa as the pickleball hub of India. His interest in the sport was piqued after watching it on YouTube, realizing its global potential.

Additionally, a clinic was organized for referees, drawing participation from industry representatives. The initiative aims to bring pickleball to the grassroots level by promoting it in schools and encouraging housing societies to create dedicated courts.

Notably, nine prominent hotels, including Taj and Novotel, have expressed interest in setting up pickleball facilities. Looking ahead, plans are underway for a significant celebrity event in November, with a focus on attracting high-spending tourists to Goa.

Ambitious plans of Pickleball Sport in India

Prabhoo recognizes that pickleball is on the verge of making a significant impact. However, for the sport to truly flourish, he acknowledges the necessity of substantial support from influential individuals and organizations.

“To popularize the game in India, substantial financial backing is crucial. We need a visionary corporate partner willing to promote pickleball at the grassroots level. Every child should have access to a paddle,” he emphasizes.

Valavalkar adds that several corporates have expressed interest in supporting the sport due to its affordability and health benefits. He firmly believes that pickleball can serve as a compelling alternative, reshaping people’s perspectives on sports and fitness.

Prabhoo underscores the recreational and health benefits of pickleball, describing it as an excellent cardiovascular exercise and an effective way to lose weight. Looking ahead, plans are in motion to establish a pickleball league similar to the Indian Premier League, with an official announcement expected in November.

Despite being wheelchair-bound due to a car accident three decades ago, Prabhoo remains undeterred. Currently played in over 80 countries, his ambition extends to introducing pickleball to another 80 nations. To fuel this vision, he has initiated a self-funded $50,000 fund and is actively seeking investors.

The ultimate goal is to elevate pickleball to Olympic status, leveraging its newness to mold its future and elevate it to a stature comparable to cricket.

Pickleball Tourments or championship Dates

The Asia Federation of Pickleball (AFP) will be organising the Asia Pickleball Games (APG) – 2023 which will be held in TaiChung, Taiwan from 06th to 09th October, 2023.

All India Pickleball Association (AIPA) being the founder member of APF, have been requested to send their team representing India in the said APG. All Indian player’s entries will be be routed through AIPA. Hence, a selection trial for the said APG will be held at PTKS, Vile Parle (East), Mumbai on 15th August, 2023.

Attached is the list of probables for said Tournament. The list has been prepared by the selection committee based on the performance of the players in the recently held AIPA sanctioned tournaments like Bainbridge Cup held at Mumbai, UPSPA Cup held at Noida and the National Ranking Tournament held at Goa.

The players will be selected from among the probables based on their performance in the above tournaments and the selection trials to be held on 15th August, 2023.
