पिछली बार वर्ष 2018 के राष्ट्रमंडल खेलों का आयोजन गोल्ड कोस्ट में हुआ था जिसमे भारत अंक तालिका में ऑस्ट्रेलिया और इंग्लैंड के बाद तीसरे स्थान पर रहा था। राष्ट्रमंडल खेलों के लिए घोषित भारतीय दल में ओलंपिक पदक विजेता नीरज चोपड़ा, पीवी सिंधू, मीराबाई चानू, लवलीना बोरगोहेन जैसे बड़े चेहरे शामिल हैं। इनके साथ ही बजरंग पूनिया, रवि कुमार दहिया, मनिका बत्रा, विनेश फोगाट, हिमा दास और अमित पंघाल भी इस दल का हिस्सा हैं। भारतीय मुक्केबाजी संघ (BFI) के उपाध्यक्ष राजेश भंडारी भारतीय टीम के दल प्रमुख बनाए गए हैं।

आगामी 28 जुलाई 2022 से ब्रिटेन के बर्मिंघम में शुरू होने जा रहे commonewealth Games में हिस्सा लेने वाले खिलाडियों से भारत के प्रधानमंत्री श्री नरेंदर मोदी ने 20 जुलाई 2022 को वीडियो कॉन्फ्रेंसिंग से बात की और उनके खेल के लिए अग्रिम शुभकामनाये दी.
इस बातचीत में एथलीटों के साथ-साथ उनके कोचों ने भी भाग लिया। इस अवसर पर केन्द्रीय युवा कार्यक्रम एवं खेल तथा सूचना एवं प्रसारण मंत्री श्री अनुराग सिंह ठाकुर और खेल सचिव भी उपस्थित थे। प्रधानमंत्री ने अंतर्राष्ट्रीय शतरंज दिवस पर राष्ट्रमंडल खेल (कॉमनवेल्थ गेम) के लिए भारतीय दल को शुभकामनाएं दीं। शतरंज ओलंपियाड भी 28 जुलाई से तमिलनाडु में हो रहा है। उन्होंने उन्हें भारत को गौरवान्वित करने के लिए शुभकामनाएं दी, जैसा कि उनके पूर्ववर्तियों ने पहले किया था।

इस बातचीत के दौरान, प्रधानमंत्री ने महाराष्ट्र के एक एथलीट श्री अविनाश साबले से महाराष्ट्र से आने और सियाचिन में भारतीय सेना में काम करने के उनके जीवन के अनुभव के बारे में जानकारी ली। उन्होंने कहा कि उन्हें भारतीय सेना में अपने 4 साल के कार्यकाल से बहुत कुछ सीखने को मिला है। उन्होंने कहा कि भारतीय सेना से उन्हें जो अनुशासन और प्रशिक्षण मिला है, उससे वे जिस क्षेत्र में भी जाएंगे, उन्हें चमकने में मदद मिलेगी। प्रधानमंत्री ने उनसे पूछा कि उन्होंने सियाचिन में काम करते हुए स्टीपलचेज फील्ड को क्यों चुना। उन्होंने कहा कि स्टीपलचेस बाधाओं को पार करने के बारे में है और उन्होंने सेना में इसी तरह का प्रशिक्षण प्राप्त किया है।
प्रधानमंत्री ने इतनी तेजी से वजन कम करने के उनके अनुभव के बारे में पूछा। उन्होंने कहा कि सेना ने उन्हें खेलों में शामिल होने के लिए प्रेरित किया और उन्हें खुद को प्रशिक्षित करने के लिए अतिरिक्त समय मिला और इससे वजन कम करने में मदद मिली।
प्रधानमंत्री ने इनके अलावा ,73 किलोग्राम वर्ग में पश्चिम बंगाल की भारोत्तोलक अचिंता शुली , केरल की बैडमिंटन खिलाड़ी सुश्री ट्रीसा जॉली , झारखंड की हॉकी खिलाड़ी सुश्री सलीमा टेटे , हरियाणा से शॉटपुट में पैरा एथलीट शर्मिला , अंडमान-निकोबार के एक साइकिल चालक श्री डेविड बेकहम से बातचीत की और उनके खेल के लिए शुभकामनाएं दीं।

प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि जो पहली बार CWG -2022 के बड़े अंतरराष्ट्रीय मैदान पर उतर रहे हैं, उनसे मैं कहूंगा कि मैदान बदला है, आपका मिजाज नहीं, आपकी जिद नहीं। उन्होंने कहा, “लक्ष्य वही है कि तिरंगे को लहराता देखना है, राष्ट्रगान की धुन को बजते सुनना है। इसलिए दबाव नहीं लेना है, अच्छे और दमदार खेल से प्रभाव छोड़ना है।”
प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि राष्ट्रमंडल खेल ( Commonwealth Games 2022 ) में एथलीट ऐसे समय में जा रहे हैं जब देश स्वतंत्रता के 75 वर्ष का उत्सव मना रहा है और एथलीट अपना सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्रदर्शन करेंगे जो देश के लिए एक उपहार होगा। इससे कोई फर्क नहीं पड़ता कि विरोधी कौन है। प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि सभी एथलीटों ने अच्छी तरह से और दुनिया में सबसे अच्छी सुविधाओं के साथ प्रशिक्षण लिया है तथा उनसे प्रशिक्षण को याद रखने व इच्छा शक्ति पर भरोसा करने का आग्रह किया है। प्रधानमंत्री ने यह भी कहा कि एथलीटों ने जो हासिल किया है वह निश्चित रूप से प्रेरणादायक है लेकिन उन्हें अब नए रिकॉर्ड बनाने और देश व देशवासियों के लिए अपना सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्रदर्शन करने का लक्ष्य रखना चाहिए।
